Forget the whole "sugar without sugar", "coffee without caffeine." We speak of a substance wrapped, soaked, and crisped in itself.
O homeland! You are far from me now, they have taken our line of sight from us, they have erected oceans, and I have aided them in doing so.
But still, still I can smell you, oil thick in the lungs of us all.
The dogs, sniffing, tracking the sodden earth, sudden lost the trail. They turned in circles, doubled back on their paths. And she knew then, the thought dawning slow, exactly had happened. The scent they had been tracking all along had been nothing more than their very breath.
Saturated fats are not unsaturated fats
ReplyDeleteI am, however surprisingly, well aware of that fact. But saturated fats and unsaturated fats are both fat.
ReplyDeleteExcellent. Possible topic for any future installment...

I'm still waiting for churros made with breast milk fried in rendered human fat. We eat what we are.
ReplyDeleteThere was a conference a couple years ago that featured a sampling of people engaged in fat studies, which I won't pretend to have enough familiarity with or investment in to criticize. Of course fatness has perhaps only a circumstantial relationship to the rich flavor of autophagia you bring up. But a woman there, self-identifying as fat and doing fat studies, silently wore a cartoonish fat suit and head for much of the conference, a fuzzy simulacrum of herself bouncing through the crowd of suits. She wrote and reported out of costume on her experiences in the suit, finding that children and adults would spontaneously approach her and hug her in the getup while they would otherwise avoid her in the flesh. Late one evening I saw her pulling her head off, her face dripping with sweat, quickly drinking and eating from a snack table before sealing herself back inside. Your title brought the image vividly to mind.
ReplyDeleteAnd that is why the US rule the world. I cannot see in my mind’s eye how the hell can somebody get the idea of a “deep fried butter”, and “chocolate covered bacon”? And then how do you make it? And then, to believe that somebody will want to eat it? The guy is a genius, a Nobel Peace Prize winner!!
